Life Should Be More Than A To-Do List
I was listening to a webinar this morning and I heard these words "Life is not just a to-do list". That was a WOW moment for me as I often treat life just like a to-do list. What is on the agenda for today? Let me make a list of everything I need to get done today. Step one, step two. Check mark, check mark, check mark.
I often find myself running around doing tons of things; some are necessary, some are just busyness, and some are just things I think I need to be involved in, whether true or not.
So I found this idea that life is more than a to-do list very interesting.
After all, we live in a world that expects us to be super busy and on the go constantly. We don't live in a world that values rest and relaxation and just doing nothing. If you aren't accomplishing tasks, then what is the point?
And then, over the last 10 days, life hit me right between the eyes. My uncle, my daddy's only brother, went to the hospital and three days later he died. My daddy passed away in 2013 and now his brother in 2015. It happened so fast, and still doesn't seem real. Not that I saw my uncle very often because "life is busy"; but last week, life stood still and was not busy with things that I think needed to get done. The things that needed to get done were loving on my aunt, cousins and their extended family. Being available for them to just vent out their feelings, sharing tears and laughter about the things we all shared growing up together. My to-dos became to-be. To be there.
You can't be there if you are so busy "getting things done" that you forget that people are the very most important part of our lives. Sometimes that is me. I have to get my work done, my house cleaned, the laundry, check off Sunday morning services at church, check off the ladies bible study, check off the nieces' ballet recitals and school stuff.
There has to be a better way to live. I don't want life to be a series of check marks. I want life to be full of rich times with the people I love, whether the times are good or bad. I want my life to truly reflect my heart, my talents, my loves; and not just a checklist of things I need to get done today.
There should be more to live than a to-do list, for sure.
This is what I want my life to look like every day. . . laughter, joy, family.
